Review: “Professional Event Coordination”, by Julia Rutherford Silvers (Wiley, 2005)

Are you looking for a very good event planning “how to”, written in plain English?
“Professional Event Coordination” may be your best choice!

The book investigates the full event planning process and provides the tools to plan, organize, and monitor almost any kind of business or social happening. In 15 chapters, from “Anatomy of an Event” to “Strategies for Success”, the volume covers important topics such as event design, site selection, audience management, entertainment and safety.

You will also find inside the book a lot of handy checklists, tables and figures, the “On Site Insight” boxes (that share interesting true stories as told by professionals) and practical Exercises (useful for the CSEP – Certified Special Event Professional - exam).

I know, it sounds like a commercial, but I’m really impressed: If you are just starting out, this book is a must have, and if you are an established professional, the volume€ is still a great reference!

How to select a team building company?

"Team building" has become a buzz word for all kinds of service providers in the MICE world: from wineries to entertainment companies to 4WD drivers. Most of them, simply don’t even know the meaning of what they are selling: they just want to take your money using a “fancy word” as a marketing tool!

Maybe you just want to share a fun experience with your stakeholders, so, after all, these companies may be a good choice (but, please, don’t call these activities “teambuilding”). However, if you really need a motivational or team building experience, it must be delivered by a company with training expertise. Don’t waste your money on anything else!

How to separate wheat from the chaff?
1) Check their references: Many companies put their client-lists on their web sites. Otherwise, ask them to send it to you. Also, check for photos and videos of their past events (and check they really are theirs!)… This will tell you if they are just starting out (and using your company as a learning experience for them!) or if they are a serious, established company. For the same reason, ask them how long have them been in the industry.
2) Ask them what is team-building about: If they are real professionals, they will be glad to tell you about team-building theory, and at least will tell you something about Maslow, Herzberg, Tuckman… otherwise, the truth is they simply don’t know anything about it!
3) Give them a short brief, and wait: If they don’t ask anything, probably they don’t know what to ask! A serious team building company will instead ask you a lot of things: number, age and sex of participants, any past experience you had, what do you want to convey, which skills do you want to improve or test (team building, communication, problem solving, leadership, trust, etc.). These questions cannot be skipped if you really want an educational experience!

HABEMUS SITUS!

Vergogna!

Grazie, ragazzi!

After over five years in the industry, Azimut – creating emotions refreshed and updated its logo, brand image and website (over here you could find one of the first sketches made for our new logo).

To tell the truth, our old website didn’t fully represent our company since a long time now, but we were simply too busy to update its contents. I know, I know: it’s a deadly sin, especially if you work in the communication industry! Shame on us!

The new bilingual (English and Italian) edition of our website has been officially put online today, with new videos, photos and contents, on the same day IMEX (one of the best worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events) starts!

Hope this will bring us good luck!

P.S: we thank Bluestone T.O. for the permission granted to publish videos of some of our productions shot during events we ran for them. Thanks, guys!
