Azimut selected as a Finalist for the 2010 Event Solutions Spotlight Award

uno dei nostri format è stato inserito in un libro tra le “101 cose da fare in Sicilia” (potete leggere il mio post sull’argomento QUI);
ci è stato dedicato un articolo su Incentivare (una delle più importanti riviste di settore Italiane) nel numero di Settembre, e parlano di noi ancora nel numero dicembrino;

I know: I’m completely untrustworthy. I promised to keep this blog updated at least weekly, and I didn’t.

The truth is it was a busy period. And also an happy one.

Everything is going fine, and we also have had a lot of good news and reviews:
one of our format was inserted in a book as one of the “101 things to do in Sicily” (you can read my post about it HERE);
an article about us was published in the September issue of Incentivare (one of Italy’s most important trade magazine), and another one has just been published in the December issue;
and now, we can’t be more proud to announce that we have been selected as a Finalist for the 2010 Event Solutions Spotlight Award in the category Entertainment company of the year.

To make us more proud, we are the only European company among the 8 finalists in our category!

The Spotlight Awards, first presented in 1997, are one of the event industry’s premier, most comprehensive awards, recognizing the best individuals, companies and achievements. Each year, the competition is stronger and the anticipation of who will win a bit more intense.

Altamente consigliato!

If you are looking for a good book that could guide you through the state-of-the-art in team-building, look no more! “Oltre il team building – come coltivare intelligenze e diversità” is the right volume for you!

From “outdoor training” to “role-playing-games”, from “artistic” to “social” activities, the authors illustrate (obviously not in a complete way, but in a pleasant one) about everything in the field, and schematically present them all in a chart at the end of the book.

But, the most interesting thing for a professional is the A.L.F.A. (Attività Ludico Formative Aggregative – Gaming, Training and Social Activities) concept. As the authors rightly wrote: “it’s not correct to call team-building any social activity that is carried out during an event”. A.L.F.A. includes even the activities that do not have team building as their main goal, but perhaps other skills like problem solving, time-management, etc.
As someone may remember, I have talked about the same argument in more than one occasion, as in the seminar I ran in April for the Faculty of Economics of Catania University (you can read my post about the seminar HERE), but I do think that no one have expressed this same concept in a clearer and better way, and I will use the A.L.F.A. concept myself (giving credits to the authors, of course).

Chiara Abbate and Simone Bandini Buti are great professionals, and it shows through these pages.
Highly recommended!
(NOTE: the book is actually available only in Italian language)

Altamente raccomandato!

Ivana Termine, Ceo of Finivest Congressi, is one the most well-known and successful professional congress organizer in Italy, with over 20 years of experience in the meeting planning field.
I recently had the pleasure to have a close look at her way of working, and I have to say I was really impressed by her extraordinary attention to detail and thorough overall planning.

So, I couldn’t be more curious about her book “Manuale per Assistenti congressuali”!

The book was written with hostesses (and stewarts) in mind, as a practical and precious guide for their work. From “the uniform” to “the contract”, and from “the briefing” to a practical “meetings and events glossary”, every and each aspect of this job is fully covered in just 65 pages.

A great book for hostesses and stewarts. And a practical reminder for any meeting professionals.
Highly recommended!

Review: “Quick team-building activities for busy managers”, by Brian Cole Miller (Amacom, 2003)

NO!

---

I will go right to the point: this book was not written for a team-building, motivational or training professional, if this is what you are looking for.
As the title suggests and the author himself says in the introduction “this book is written for the busy manager who wants to add an element of team-building to a meeting”. The volume is organized into two parts: the first one is “instructional”; the second one consists of bullet-pointed presentations of fifty exercises. So this is what you have to expect: easy, quick activities that promise “results in 15 minuts”.

What’s my opinion?
You can read a lot of positive reviews on Amazon.com. I do not agree with anyone of them.

Why?
- Can you really expect results in less than 15 minutes? NO! It would be a miracle, not a team-building activity!
- Most of the activities lacks in creativity and excitement, so they may easily be interpreted as “just another mind test”, invalidating the experience.
- This book do not contains any real information about what teambuilding is: it is a collection of activities and suggestions on how to play them. Without any real understanding of the dynamics involved, your risk is to obtain nothing, or (worst!) to suffer from various “collateral effects”.
- This book suggest that you can manage a team building activity for your own team. But this is a mirage, if you are a not a training professional. First of all, it’s easy to appear arrogant and presumptuous. Also in this conditions your team may be tempted to falsify their reaction just to favorably impress you!
- Finally, if you are a manager, you are PART of your team. So, you need to be a part of the activity, not the facilitator, or else the results will be inexorably useless!

“Quick team-building activities for busy managers” will not turn you into a teambuilding or motivation professional. Not that any other single book would. And, if you are a “busy manager” as the title suggests, it very likeable that you are a certified expert in something else… will you entrust someone to play your role just because he have read a book titled “quick management for busy people”? Would you permit a man who has just read “carpentry for dummies” to build your house?

If you are a professional, don’t waste your time and money on this book.
If you are a busy manager, do yourself a favor: ask a professional.
If you need help for some major issue, professionals are the only solution; and, if you just want to improve the working atmosphere or need help for some minor problem, each real professional will be glad to give you some quick and easy hint. For free.

Review: “Professional Event Coordination”, by Julia Rutherford Silvers (Wiley, 2005)

Are you looking for a very good event planning “how to”, written in plain English?

The book investigates the full event planning process and provides the tools to plan, organize, and monitor almost any kind of business or social happening. In 15 chapters, from “Anatomy of an Event” to “Strategies for Success”, the volume covers important topics such as event design, site selection, audience management, entertainment and safety.

You will also find inside the book a lot of handy checklists, tables and figures, the “On Site Insight” boxes (that share interesting true stories as told by professionals) and practical Exercises (useful for the CSEP – Certified Special Event Professional - exam).
