Looking for a job in the event-planning field?

- In inglese: “Event Planning : The Ultimate Guide to Successful Meetings, Corporate Events, Fundraising Galas, Conferences, Conventions, Incentives and Other Special Events”, di Judy Allen – edizioni Wiley

Just after the seminar I ran for the University of Catania (you can find the entire post HERE), I received some emails asking me for more information about the qualifications and skills needed to work in my field.
What an embarrassing question!
To be a lawyer you have to study law, and to be a doctor you have to study medicine.
What about the event-planning field?

STUDIES
In Italy do not exist any related university faculty, as far as I know. In the last few years, anyway, there has been a flowering of courses and post-graduation master courses related to our world, but not always that’s enough to form skilled professionals.
So, about the studies, will be advantaged people who has a degree related to the communication, tourism, marketing and (motivational) training fields. Obviously, a good knowledge of the English language and any other foreign language is almost compulsory, as you will have to relate with foreign clients, artists and suppliers.

BOOKS AND REFERENCES
Anyway, does exist a (not so wide) bibliography, mostly in English, useful if you are really interested in undertaking this career. In the next weeks I will review a few of this books, but right away let me recommend, for the wide approach, two books, both written by esteemed professionals and very good for anyone who try to uncover this magical world:
- In Italian: “La magia degli eventi”, by Roberta Cocco –Sperling & Kupfer
- In English: “Event Planning : The Ultimate Guide to Successful Meetings, Corporate Events, Fundraising Galas, Conferences, Conventions, Incentives and Other Special Events”, by Judy Allen –Wiley

Obviously, there are also a lot of trade magazines, really useful for getting up to date: in Italy, let me mention “MICE” (published by BEMA), “Meeting & Congressi” and “Incentivare” (Ediman), “Convegni” (Convegni), and “E20” (AdC – Agenzia della Comunicazione). These magazines are not available in the usual newspaper kiosk, but only on direct subscription.

WHAT’S NEXT?
Anyway , you couldn’t learn by reading books the only features that really are compulsory: it’s needed an innate creativity, noteworthy public-relations skills, a predisposition to planning and orchestrating the overall and the detail, and a spontaneous curiosity toward everything, and specially toward music, theatre, movies, and every and each form of art and communication.

About the rest, it’s my opinion that, as per any artisan job, the best way to become skilled at it is to directly work in the field, rising through the ranks, working side by side with a competent professional.
There are things you will learn only dirtying your hands.

Motivation, teambuilding and entertainment in the MICE field

The one above was the title of the seminar I ran for the business college of the University of Catania, as a part of a series on “Tourism: the congress and business events field” scheduled and arranged by professor Benedetto Puglisi.

10 qualified top-level speakers, like Ivana Termine (Finivest Congressi) or Nico Torrisi (president of Confturismo and Federalberghi Catania), completely covered the MICE supply chain, introducing it in a complete and thorough way.

For me, it was a fun and rewarding experience; and, I’m proud to admit it, I learned a lot!

Besides, from that moment on, I’ve received a lot of personal emails from students who wanted to go deeper into the matter, asking me for titles of books to study, or simply the qualifications and skills needed to work in the field.

I will try to answer a lot of these questions in the following posts.
Hope you’ll find it useful.

WE'RE BACK!

Innanzitutto, alcuni importanti e prestigiosi eventi MICE hanno rubato tutto il mio tempo;
poi, una serie di rivoluzioni lavorative ci hanno portato a un importante rinnovamento del nostro staff;

A presto,
D.

Spero mi perdoneranno i futuri (inevitabili) errori.

That's it: my last post on this blog is dated June 2nd, 2008!
What happened?
First of all, some important and prestigious MICE events robbed me of all of my time;
Next, a revolution in our company brought us to an important renewal of our staff members;
And finally, a massive operation of updating our logo, internet site (soon to be online), and communication strategies worn out my last energies.

Now, at my first sigh of relief, I’m here again, to give new life to this blog, with a lot of new ideas yet crammed inside my mind.
Expect everything!

See you soon,
D.

P.S: from now on, this blog will be written in Italian and English, to be understandable even to my friends and colleagues who doesn’t talk Italian!
Hope they will forgive my future (unavoidable) grammatical errors.
