"Experiments with Mentos" crowned online commercial of the decade

Can you imagine which one is most significant online marketing campaign of the last ten years?
GoViral gives an answer: 40 campaigns were shortlisted by a panel of advertising experts, and then put to a public vote through an online poll.

And the winner is…
The unforgettable “Mentos & Diet Coke Experiments”, by EepyBird,
…that, by the way, was not planned to be a commercial for Diet Coke nor Mentos, but just a stunt from the guys at EepyBird!
Just a little note: in 2007, this same video even won the Webby Award for best viral video and was nominated for an Emmy Award for outstanding broadband content.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Addio, 2009!
Benvenuto, 2010!

2009 finally ended.

It was a difficult year, as both the motivation and communication industries strongly suffered for the current recession. If you needed some proof, a recent SITE survey declared that 76% of motivational experience providers and buyers worldwide have experienced a decrease in their activity.
But… it seems that finally everything is changing back to normal!
Personally, we are already seeing a lot of RFP activity and new bookings for 2010 and 2011, and we hope the same is or will be for our comrades in the industry!
So, let’s look at the future with a little more optimism… may be it will bring you good luck!

Goodbye, 2009!
Welcome, 2010!

Cash vs Non-cash incentives

---

Often, I’m asked by my corporate clients what I think about pure cash versus non-monetary incentive.
And each time, my answer is the same: several principles of social and cognitive psychology suggest that winners perceive non-monetary incentive more valuable than the same value of that prize in cash.
Dr Scott Jeffrey of University of Waterloo wrote in one essay that there are 4 motives for this: evaluability, separability, justifiability, and social reinforcement.

EVALUABILITY: as giving a monetary value to non-monetary incentive is not easy, the “instinctive” and “affective” reaction to the award substitutes for its real value. Moreover, affective evaluations tend to increase value beyond the actual!

SEPARABILITY: a cash prize is cognitively aggregated with salary. Thus, a cash prize does not stand out and is easily forgotten. On the other hand, a non-cash incentive is unique and really stand out from salary.

JUSTIFIABILITY: many non-cash incentives are luxuries that participants normally would not justify purchasing. If participants value it highly, but probably would not purchase it, than the opportunity to earn it as a reward for hard work does not violate the participants’ principles.

SOCIAL REINFORCEMENT : acknowledgement from colleagues and friends is one of the most important motivators for most people. And people are uncomfortable bragging about cash, but will enjoy talking about the trip or the award they won!

Azimut selected as a Finalist for the 2010 Event Solutions Spotlight Award

uno dei nostri format è stato inserito in un libro tra le “101 cose da fare in Sicilia” (potete leggere il mio post sull’argomento QUI);
ci è stato dedicato un articolo su Incentivare (una delle più importanti riviste di settore Italiane) nel numero di Settembre, e parlano di noi ancora nel numero dicembrino;

I know: I’m completely untrustworthy. I promised to keep this blog updated at least weekly, and I didn’t.

The truth is it was a busy period. And also an happy one.

Everything is going fine, and we also have had a lot of good news and reviews:
one of our format was inserted in a book as one of the “101 things to do in Sicily” (you can read my post about it HERE);
an article about us was published in the September issue of Incentivare (one of Italy’s most important trade magazine), and another one has just been published in the December issue;
and now, we can’t be more proud to announce that we have been selected as a Finalist for the 2010 Event Solutions Spotlight Award in the category Entertainment company of the year.

To make us more proud, we are the only European company among the 8 finalists in our category!

The Spotlight Awards, first presented in 1997, are one of the event industry’s premier, most comprehensive awards, recognizing the best individuals, companies and achievements. Each year, the competition is stronger and the anticipation of who will win a bit more intense.

Altamente consigliato!

---

If you are looking for a good book that could guide you through the state-of-the-art in team-building, look no more! “Oltre il team building – come coltivare intelligenze e diversità” is the right volume for you!

From “outdoor training” to “role-playing-games”, from “artistic” to “social” activities, the authors illustrate (obviously not in a complete way, but in a pleasant one) about everything in the field, and schematically present them all in a chart at the end of the book.

But, the most interesting thing for a professional is the A.L.F.A. (Attività Ludico Formative Aggregative – Gaming, Training and Social Activities) concept. As the authors rightly wrote: “it’s not correct to call team-building any social activity that is carried out during an event”. A.L.F.A. includes even the activities that do not have team building as their main goal, but perhaps other skills like problem solving, time-management, etc.
As someone may remember, I have talked about the same argument in more than one occasion, as in the seminar I ran in April for the Faculty of Economics of Catania University (you can read my post about the seminar HERE), but I do think that no one have expressed this same concept in a clearer and better way, and I will use the A.L.F.A. concept myself (giving credits to the authors, of course).

Chiara Abbate and Simone Bandini Buti are great professionals, and it shows through these pages.
Highly recommended!
(NOTE: the book is actually available only in Italian language)

The book is really interesting, and I can’t be more proud to read that one of the “101 things to do” is… our “The Invisible Cities” activity.
Moreover, side by side with really unforgettable things like “seeing the Temple of Concordia at dawn” or visiting “Aetna, king Arthur’s Avalon”.

Thanks to Daniela Gambino, the author, for having chosen our “The Invisible Cities” as one of the things that have to be done in Sicily.
We will try to be on top of it!

Black Eyed Pease goes "ambient"!

A few days ago, a friend of mine on Facebook (“Odd ties” is her nickname) published the video you can see above. A brilliant instance of “ambient marketing” made for the Black Eyed Pease.
She told me: “What an inspired example of pure creativity!”
Uhmmm… are you sure?
To tell the truth, a lot of the most famous "creative" works in communication and marketing are just… imitations of other great works.

Downwards on this post, in this case, you will find the source - the (REALLY) great commercial stunt made for the new T-mobile just a few months ago (January 15th, 2009), next to the astounding making of!

World's Top Holiday Destinations

And that’s not enough! The prize was assigned by the hardest jury of all: the readers of the celebrated magazine Condè Nast Traveller, that is real tourists without any ulterior motives.

There is something more I can say?

Booking the right entertainment for your event

I miei suggerimenti?

---

A few days ago, I was on a beach enjoying an ice-cream with a friend, when an event-planner phoned me and asked to give him some help. I asked what he needed and he explained that he was organizing a trade-fair (open to the public), and that he simply forgot to plan any kind of entertainment. In fact, he also forgot all the sound services!
When I asked when the fair was meant to start, he simply stated: “It already started this morning, and I’m receiving a lot of complaints from all the exhibitors! Someone also said me he’s gonna leaving if I don’t fix this!”

I’ll leave you draw your own conclusions on this specific happening, but I’m always astonished by how many times I see that the value of entertainment is underestimated even by professionals!

As a strong communication tool, any event has to be consistent in every and each of his parts. As such, entertainment, if appropriate, should be an integral part of your event planning.
In particular, corporate events are extremely important to hold onto current employees and customers. However, many people feel they may be stuck in meeting rooms all day, wasting their time with people they don’t care of. Creating events that are inspiring and motivational is not easy, and a boring event is the last thing you want for your guests.

I know: booking the right entertainment for your event is an hard job.
You want it to really be memorable.
You want it on a tight budget.
And you don’t want to get worried by it.

My suggestions?
Be consistent: the chosen entertainment have to be fitting with the main theme of the event or simply with the theme of the night. Anything that clashes with the theme will instead be perceived as inappropriate and, moreover, may drive the attention away from your main topic.
Choose audience-appropriate entertainment: not every entertainment fits any audience. Something that would be appropriate for a little group of old-aged managers will not fit your best 100 employees. Age, sex, status, job, number of participants and hours available will strongly affect your choices!
Be unique: don’t be obvious and surprise your guests! Your best options is to ask professional companies to help you getting something unique yet appropriate. They will offer you custom-made proposal you would have never thought of!
As Ferran Adrià (chef at El Bulli, the most famous restaurant in the world, already fully reserved for the next 3 years) said: “If you listen to customers, what they tell you they want will be based on something they already know. If I like a good steak, you can serve that to me, and I’ll enjoy it. But it will never be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. To create those experiences, you almost can’t listen to the customer.”
Plan ahead: we are not just talking about affordability, but availability. The sooner you know what you need, the more likely that you will be able to find the perfect fit.

59 questions to ask
